Hospital Arts Project - Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS

http://www.nnuh.nhs.uk
Our Hospital Arts Project plays an important role in providing a positive health care setting and healing environment for our patients, staff and visitors through a wide-ranging programme of arts.
The Arts Project for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust enhances the Hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff, by involving and engaging them in a wide range of programmes.

These programmes include visual arts and crafts, interior design, events, performances and workshops, as well as external arts and design including sculpture, seating and gardens. We also care for the Hospital's collection of historic artefacts.

All our projects are funded by grants from organisations and charitable donations, no money is taken from healthcare budgets. The raising of external funding is essential for our work and we are extremely grateful to all of those who provide financial assistance for our projects. Your support is invaluable.

The Hospital Arts Project is part of the Facilities Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. It enjoys the full support of the NHS Trust and our PFI partners, Octagon and Serco, and is given direction and enthusiasm from an active Steering Committee. A group of volunteers contribute effectively to the projects and we enjoy tremendous support from our Patrons

The role of the Arts Coordinator, presently Emma Jarvis, is to improve the health care environment for our patients, staff and visitors through the use of all forms of visual and performing arts, and to develop and implement an arts strategy which is dynamic, innovative and engaging, creating an environment that is warm, welcoming and uplifting.

Key tasks within this role are improving the build environment of the Hospital, providing a wide programme of arts (site-specific commissions, gardens, performing arts and workshops), strategic planning and project-specific planning and management and organising fundraising activities.

Art Exhibitions

Our exhibitions are held on levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Main Hospital Street which runs through the East, West and Centre blocks. Artworks are displayed in sealed glass display cases which are placed along each floor of the main Hospital Street. There are also several floor standing cases in the East and West Atriums which house crafts or 3D artwork.

Most of the artworks displayed are for sale with price lists and details available from the Hospital Arts Project office.

We show arts and crafts from up to thirty exhibitors each year and aim for a mix of professional artists, community groups and members of Hospital staff. Also, we like to show different types of artworks in our exhibitions - cross stitch, pastels, photographs, prints and weaving have all featured recently. Whatever is displayed, we like to maintain the same high standard of work.

Exhibitions are all selected formally by the HAP Committee so that all artists are given an equal chance.

Arts Workshops

Our programme of workshops has been established to appeal to the broadest possible range of hospital staff. We also warmly invite members of staff from the neighbouring organisations based on the Norwich Research Park to attend these workshops.

The workshops tend to be held either at lunchtime or directly after work as these are the most convenient and popular times. They last for up to one and a half hours depending on the type of workshop. All of our workshops operate on a non-profit making, 'pay as you go' basis.

Our programme of workshops is devised with the aim of improving the working day so that staff can relax, take a quality break and seize the opportunity to learn something new. Past workshops have included: Yoga, Indian Head Massage, Tai Chi, Dance, Singing, Drumming, Card Making, Drawing and Painting.
All our tutors are fully trained, have full certification and are accredited to various proffesional organisations.

Exhibitions (Exhibitions Applicants)

We host in the region of thirty exhibitions a year which are held on the main Hospital Street. The information that follows informs you about many aspects of exhibiting here at the hospital.
The Hospital Arts Project does not charge any fees or take a commission for exhibiting, however we do ask for a donation of around 10% of any artworks sold. These donations help us to maintain our display facilities.
All our projects are funded by grants from organisations and charitable donations, no money is taken from healthcare budgets.
Our Exhibition Programme was established to:
  • brighten the main Hospital Street
  • offer a vibrant and changing environment for a positive point of focus for staff, medical students, patients and visitors
  • provide the opportunity for artists to exhibit and sell their work in the hospital environment
